Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm whole milk
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1½ teaspoons fine sea salt
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 2 tablespoons extra butter for brushing

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and one tablespoon of sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the remaining sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Whisk everything together until well combined.
  3. Start with 3 cups of flour, stirring with a wooden spoon. The dough will be shaggy. Add the remaining flour a little at a time until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough to release air. Divide it into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  7. Place the shaped rolls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F and bake the rolls for 18-22 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Brush the rolls with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven.

Notes

Make sure your milk is warm but not hot. Use good-quality butter for the best flavor. Store cooled rolls in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
